The five one-metre square tapestries were created by local artists and crafters through a partnership with the South Durban Area-Based Management (ABM) and South Durban's Umlazi, Lamontville, Wentworth, Merebank, Isipingo and Bluff communities.
Late in 2009, community representatives met to brainstorm what is special about their communities' history, culture, environment, role models, tourist attractions and future vision. Artists and crafters from these communities then created the five beaded, stitched, painted and appliquéd tapestries that each uses distinctive art and craft traditions. Together, the tapestries weave a richly textured story of South Durban's vibrant and diverse communities.
They also portray the extraordinary creativity, optimism and future visions of the people of South Durban, an area that has been plagued by pollution and socio-economic difficulties.
