08 June 2010 Championing youth in South Durban ‘Youth Champions of South Durban' is a youth development programme that aims to assist young people to build positive values, a sense of identity and purpose and the drive to achieve their goals.
Participating youth were selected against criteria developed by school principals, Life Orientation educators and community-based youth organisations in the South Durban basin.
Youth are compiling journals of their experiences. Story elements from these journals will be workshopped with renowned story-teller Gcina Mhlophe and will culminate in live performances at the Umlazi fan park during June.
Each youth will be matched with a mentor who can offer relevant experience and access to life-building opportunities. Mentors and youth alike have been encouraged to build ongoing positive relationships with one another beyond the life of the project.
